Quality vs Cost in Epoxy

The Thinner Fraud: Why Cheap Epoxy is a Costly Mistake

If you’ve received a quote that seems "too good to be true," it probably is. In the Australian flooring industry, there is a common shortcut known as "Thinning."What is Thinning?

Professional 100% solids epoxy is thick, honey-like, and difficult to apply. It requires expensive equipment and high-torque mixers. To save time and money, many installers add up to 20% All-Purpose Thinners or Xylene to the mix. It makes the epoxy "watery" and easy to roll on, but it destroys the floor’s integrity. How Thinning Affects Your Floor:

  1. Invisible Shrinkage: When the solvent evaporates, the floor shrinks. If an installer applies 1mm of thinned epoxy, you may only be left with 0.7mm of actual floor. You are paying for product that literally disappears into the air.
  2. The "Pin-Hole" Problem: As solvents escape the resin, they leave behind microscopic "tunnels." This makes your floor porous, allowing oil and chemicals to seep in and eventually cause delamination.
  3. Hot-Tire Failure: Thinned epoxy is brittle. When your car tyres get hot from driving, they "grab" the thinned resin and pull it right off the concrete.
  4. Toxic Exposure: Thinners release high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). If your installer is using thinners, your house will smell like a chemical factory for days, posing a health risk to your household.

PureBuild is 100% Solvent-Free

We follow manufacturer specifications to the letter. We use zero thinners. This means:

  • Maximum Build: You get 100% of the product on your floor.
  • Superior Bond: Our resins stay dense and non-porous.
  • Lifetime Durability: Our floors are engineered to handle heavy vehicles without peeling.

Don't pay for a thinned-down floor. Demand a PureBuild.
